Hello Dere!

Scott and I attended a wedding in Augusta this past weekend. The bride was a woman who was in Scott's group at a church camp 20 years ago. He wrote to each of the group afterward but Casie is the only one who continued writing (now emailing). He has watched her grow as a Christian and from teen to bride. She is the recreation director for her church. We decided to use the weekend to visit Josh, Nikki, & Eli, too. We drove to Buford on Friday, then to Augusta, Saturday, and back to Buford, Saturday night. Sunday morning, Nikki was playing with Eli. He would pick up an animal and say "Hello dere, how are you?" to another animal. I had to get my camera. We didn't get the "how are you?", but I did learn that a camel and polar bear can be friends even though their native habitats are extremely different.

The Unequal Distribution of Water

While in the Midwest last month, Scott and I kept commenting on the amount of rain. It seemed to rain at least every other day. On the drive across southern Illinois, we saw a lake where there should have been a field with crops. The water was literally to the horizon. When we first got to Missouri, I found myself going to a window and watching the rain. It had been a long time since I had experienced that much rain. So while Midwest is flooded, the Southeast is parched. I read in the paper this week that our county in NC has been rated with six other counties in the state as D4 or Exceptional Drought conditions. This is the driest rating, drier than D3-Extreme Drought. We stopped watering the grass in the early Spring but are still watering our flowers. Scott is always thinking about the possiblity of our well going dry. This is a picture I took of the yard today.

As the flood waters of the Mississippi continue south, Amy and family live far enough from the river for their home to be safe. I heard this morning that the amount of expected flooding has begun to be overestimated instead of underestimated as it was in Iowa. Brenda & Jason are friends of theirs who recently moved back home to Iowa. Even though their home was safe from the flooding, their church wasn't. I borrowed these pics from Brenda's blog. The first one is the parking lot and the second is the back of the sanctuary.

Remembering A Small Town Southern Man

My daddy was born into what Tom Brokaw referred to as the “Greatest Generation”. He was a child during the Depression and became a man during WWII. He married my mama, they had four daughters, lived and died in the same small town where they were both born. He worked hard all his life because that was just what you did. He worked the land, worked in textile mills, excavated land, poured concrete, and created beautiful things from wood. He and Mama were married 54 years before she died. It broke his heart. That broken heart went on beating for 364 days before it stopped and he was able to join her. Alan Jackson wrote a song about his father, Small Town Southern Man. Every time I hear it I think of Daddy. This is the chorus:
He bowed his head to Jesus
And he stood for Uncle Sam
And he only loved one woman
Was always proud of what he had
He said his greatest contribution
Is the ones you leave behind
Raised on the ways and gentle kindness
Of a small town Southern man

I miss you, Daddy.

The Mind of a Child

When I was a parent, I am sure I was too busy trying to teach, discipline, work, etc. to really appreciate the mind of a child. It is true they do make you see life differently. While staying 3 weeks with Trip and Quinn, I was able to revisit the ever evolving mind of a child. Amy and her sitter, Chris, thought is was time to start potty training Quinn. Amy asked me if I would work on it for her. He did really well, in that every time I took him, he would go, but he wasn't to the stage of realizing it for himself yet. I am sure that Amy and Chris will have him completely there before long. Quinn's 2 year old thinking is linear. He recalls things he has been taught. Example, if I use the potty, Gram will give me a M&M. Trip's 4 year old mind is much more complex. Example, if I go with Quinn and Gram to the potty and sing a nonsensical "potty" song to Quinn and he is successful, maybe Gram will give me a M&M too. Trip is constantly thinking. He questions everything and for every answer, there are usually two more questions. His mind is like a big sponge and he is soaking up everything he can. He has become fascinated with Heaven . Before I was there in April, Amy told him that her rolling pin was made by my daddy. After many more questions, he learned that both of my parents were in Heaven. When I was there in April, he told me that when he went to Heaven, he was going to tell my dad thank you for making the rolling pin. The following are some more conversations about Heaven from this visit:
After being reprimanded, he said that he wished that my mom wasn't in Heaven so he could tell her to put me in time-out.
He told Amy that he didn't want to go to Heaven. Amy said that he did want to go to Heaven but not until he was very old. She tried to think of the oldest person that Trip knew, which is Chuck's grandmother who is in her 80s and said that you would be even older than Momaw. He nodded and said but not as old as Grandpap (Scott, 58 years old) :)
On our last night, we were coming back from eating out. He asked Amy what my mom's name was. Amy said that her name was Memaw but she called her Meem. He picked up a toy cell phone and said he was going to call her in Heaven. The following is his conversation, "Hello, Memaw, can you come down from Heaven to Missouri and get Gram and take her to North Carolina? She needs help. 'Preciate it! Bye".
Thanks Scoggins for a great and enlightening visit. I love you all.

Playing in the Sprinkler

We have been in Missouri for almost three weeks while the boys' sitter, Chris, and her husband were in Russia adopting a daughter, Masha. They finally arrived home last night about midnight after a 35 hour flight. We are staying a couple more days, so they can recover and try to adjust to their new family. We will be going back to NC on Saturday. I can't tell you how much we have enjoyed being here with Amy and her family, we just don't see them nearly enough. Today with the temperature almost 90 we decided to turn on the sprinkler and let the boys play. Trip loved it but Quinn was a little apprehensive. By the end he was at least getting near it. Amy said that I had his swimsuit up to his armpits, but he didn't seem to mind. I do love to hear my little boys laugh!

Scott's New Do!

For some reason after 58 years of straight hair, Scott's has suddenly gotten a big wave in the front. You can't see it very well in this picture because he had been wearing a cap. The last time he got his hair cut, he said he was going to get it cut shorter and then came home with it short on the sides and that big wave still on top. Since we are still in Missouri, he decided to go today and get it cut again. Before he left, I told him to think more "Harrison Ford" than "Andy Griffin". This is how he came home. The woman that cut it took a little more off than he wanted but I am sure that big wave will be back in a few weeks.

Going to MoBo!

Scott and I took the boys to the Missouri Botanical Gardens. It is a beautiful place and we only saw a small portion of it. We spent most of the time in the Children's Garden. Enjoy the photos!

Happy Birthday, Amy!

Sunday was Amy's birthday. After church, she and I went shopping and she bought some summer clothes. Then we met the guys for dinner at PF Changs. When we got home there was ice cream cake. So other than Quinn refusing to eat and making himself barf at the restaurant, I think it was a good day for her. I hope this year is the best yet.

Dragons & Mothers Day

I had a wonderful Mothers Day weekend. Nikki, Josh, & Eli came to visit and on Saturday we went to nearby Lake Lure for the First Annual Dragon Boat Races.

On Sunday the guys took the honored mothers out to eat (Granny, Nikki, Lynn, and me), everyone came back to our house for dessert - Strawberry Pizza. Amy called on Skype (video call on the computer) while everyone was here. I love Skype, being able not only to talk to our Missouri Scoggins but to see them. Granny loved it too! It is really the next best thing to everyone being here.

Remembering Mama

As Mother's Day 2008 approaches, I realized that this will be the 8th Mother's Day since Mama died. I try not to say "when we lost Mama", since she isn't lost. I know where she is. Even though her body died, I believe that love doesn't. When someone gives you love, then it lives in your heart. So as long as those whom Mama loved live, her love lives, too. I miss her every day, but I know that she is watching over us. Even though she was not physically able to be there when Trip, Quinn, & Eli were born, I know she was there. If you knew my mama, then you would know it too.
She came from a line of strong women, her mother, Mattie Lou; her grandmother, Lucinda; and her great grandmother, Lucy and so on. I am remembering them on this Mother's Day too.
When Josh was born, I realized that each baby should come with an instruction manual. They are all different, so one book doesn't cover it. Since this didn't happen, I decided that Mama would be my standard. So through the years, I have tried to ask myself - WWMD (What Would Mama Do)? Unfortunately for my children, I didn't always go with that answer ;)

The following are some Mama-isms that I was thinking about today:
1. If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all.
2. If you act as nice as you look, then you shouldn't have any problems (when going out).
3. There is NO excuse for bad manners.

Happy Mother's Day to all!

Rose Anomaly?

Several years ago, Josh and Nikki gave me 2 rose trees for Mother's Day, which I loved. It was when we lived in Grayson. When we moved to NC, I wasn't able to bring them with me since we were going to be living in a rental for a year while our new house was being built. So I bought replacements last year. For those of you not familiar with rose trees, they do not grow in nature but are rose bushes grafted onto a small tree. Mine are Mr. Lincoln which are a deep red (see catalog picture above). All last Spring through Fall, I had beautiful roses. I noticed in the late Fall that there were sprouts coming up near the trunk of both trees, which I assumed were new rose bushes. This week the sprouts started blooming, but they aren't Mr. Lincolns! If anyone understands this anomaly, please explain.

The first picture is of the new pink roses; the second one is the rose tree with a couple of dark red buds at the top and the new pink roses in the bottom center of the picture.

Eli and G

Eli's day care teacher called Nikki on Wednesday to tell her that Eli was covered in what sounded like hives. The doctor said it was a food allergy. So I volunteered to keep him at home until he had recovered. On Thursday, he was feeling okay, even though he still had splotches, so we decided to get out of the house on a beautiful Spring day. We went to Little Mulberry Park. It is a wonderful place for people of all ages. There is an especially nice playground area. Eli loves the swings, both little and big kid swings. I think he would have stayed on them all day, as long as you push him. He did play on the fort with the slides and the sand area. I didn't think about taking my camera so there aren't any accompanying pics. On Friday we went to the Mall of Georgia and he played on the playground there and then we had lunch with Aunt Susan. After his nap we went for a walk in Historic Buford. I was glad that he felt fine as he was recooperating, so we could still have fun. All of the hives appeared to be gone when I left Saturday morning. Since I didn't post any pictures, I am posting the beginning of a video where Eli is calling me. This was taken several months ago.

Gwen

Today Scott and I babysat for our niece, Gwen. We have a total of 12 nieces and nephews. Six on each side. The oldest is 42 years old and Gwen is the youngest at 19 months. There are 8 grandnieces and grandnephews, she is only older than one of them, the oldest is 19. She is also younger than all three of our grandsons.

A Week for Gram

At Amy's request, I was fortunate to be able to spend a week with her and her family. I was a little apprehensive at first about taking care of the boys alone, especially about venturing from the house. In the past, I have always had Scott there to help. But when we were out, my concerns were unfounded. Both boys were obedient and Trip is very good helping with Quinn. Good job, Amy and Chuck! Since the weather for the first part of the week was terrible (snow flurries on Sunday), I took crafts and projects to do inside. We decorated a shirt for Mom, decorated a treasure box, made lunch bag puppets & cookies. The last day the weather was cooperating and we were able to go to the park for our first "Party at the Park". (No, Quinn it wasn't Potty at the Park.) We spent the morning at the playground, then we went on a Nature Walk and the boys collected "nature" in their bags (rocks, sticks, dirt from the ball field). On Saturday, Amy and Chuck went out on Date Night and Sunday, Amy and I had Girl's Afternoon. It was really a great week for me, thanks for asking me (and Scott for not complaining too much).

Spring

Even though I have always loved Fall and the brilliant colors of the leaves, Spring is the renewal of life. Today I took some pics of the first flowers of Spring in my yard. The following poem from Rod McKuen was on my desk for years:
"Trees are monuments to God, cities monuments to man. I need to meet my God again among the trees and ferns. There is too much of me in my life and not enough of Him."

More Backyard Nature Pics

Today we had four deer and two turkeys come for lunch in the backyard. Not sure what to expect next.

Our Backyard Deer

We have seen deer around our house since we moved in. Last summer I would occasionally find one eating my flowers. Scott decided to put out some deer corn in the backyard to help feed them during the winter. He built a feeder but they don't like it as much as they do the corn he throws on the ground. When they come to feed, we see anywhere between 2-8 deer at a time. He has tried several times to get a picture but one is generally on sentry duty all the time and will scatter the group in a second. He was able to take this picture this week. If you click on it, you can see two of them. As soon as he took it, they ran. We have enjoyed watching them, but he is going to have to keep feeding them if they start eating my flowers again.

Finley Weekend in NC

This weekend, Nikki was photographing a wedding in nearby Bat Cave. In addition to her, Josh, and Eli, Nikki's parents, brother and sister-in-law came for the weekend. We had a good time shopping and sightseeing. The photo and video were taken on Sunday while the guys were grilling burgers.

Snow 2008

We have lived in NC for 3 winters and this is our first snowfall! It looks like we only got 1-2 inches and is starting to thaw. For a few more pictures

Christmas Videos

The following two videos were taken with my new Flip video recorder that Scott gave me for Christmas. The first one, I took, is of Quinn telling me to stop taking his picture because he is trying to do something. I am not sure, but I think that is usually why you take video, because someone is doing something :) The second one, Josh took, is Eli singing "Twinkle, Twinkle" in our basement or as he says "Twankle, Twankle". Josh couldn't get him to sing at first, then when he started Eli didn't want to give up the microphone. That is Quinn singing a little in the background but he would not sing into the mic.
